Chris Lortie and I recently completed a short peer reviewed article on James Tenney’s violin piece Koan and his string quartet version of it. It was published on the ACTOR Project‘s website as part of their Amazing Moments in Timbre series, focusing on timbre and orchestration.

To give proper credit, the article was based in large part on Chris’s prior research. I attended a talk he gave on the subject for a seminar at Stanford, and offered to help turn it into an article. You can see the resulting published article here, or look at the authors’ manuscript here.
